Pizza Festival 2009

Pizzafest is running from the 10th to the 21st of September 2009 in Naples, birth-place of Italian pizza, in celebration of one of the World’s most popular foods.

Traditionally, there are only two types of pizza – the Marinara and the Margherita. The oldest is the Marinara, which is a simple pizza made only the crust, tomatoes, garlic, oregano, basil and extra virgin olive oil. The second type of traditional Neapolitan pizza, the Margherita, made with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese, to represent the colours of the Italian flag

We’re no pizza evangelists here at Chilli and Chocolate, and I’ll me making my own favourite this weekend – pizza topped with tuna, black olives, chilli, and mozzarella. We’ll be posting the recipe for the pizza base along with cooking times on Monday – so why not celebrate pizza this weekend and tell us about your favourite toppings and recipes?

Pizza Facts

The Marinara is the oldest type of pizza, so named because it was made to welcome home the sailors returning from their fishing trips on the Bay of Naples.

In 1889, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples for the Summer. They had heard of the famed pizza and wanted to sample it, so they summoned one of the city’s most celebrated pizza masters, Raffaele Esposito, who invented a new pizza with mozzarella for the queen. Impressed by the colours and taste of the pizza, Queen Margherita proclaimed it her favourite and so it became known as Pizza Margherita in her honour.
